Photography for FdA Fashion Students
My current photography project is looking at fashion photography and today I spoke to some of the fashion students on the Foundation Fashion course at Uni. We are going to be working together so that I can photograph their work for their course, which includes photographing their final collections. I can use the photos for my project and as an ongoing collaboration throughout the year which will...

Self-Directed Project
Today we made a start on our self-directed projects by looking at how to put together a research proposal. My self-directed project is going to involve looking at digital and traditional image manipulation techniques and also looking at ways of creating a photograph without using a camera.  I found a nice long list of books that I want to borrow from the University’s library to kick off my...

David Hockney - A Bigger Picture
I went to the current David Hockney exhibition - A Bigger Picture - at the Royal Academy of Art in London this week. We studied his work as part of our Image Making and Manipulation module last year and I really love his work so I was pretty excited to be able to go and see some of it being exhibited.  It was spread across several rooms, with lots of his work on display. A lot of it was...

Client Job Two - Building a Website
As our second client project has stalled a bit, Beth and I are going to be designing a website for our photography tutor Luke Salaman. He is finishing his masters degree and wants a portfolio site to show off some of his work. We decided on a wordpress site so that Luke can update the site with new work as and when he wants with no complicated coding involved! He is browsing through the hundreds...

Norman Parkinson at the M-Shed, Bristol
Yesterday (13/2/12) Beth and I took a trip to Bristol so that we could see the Norman Parkinson fashion photography exhibiton.  Unfortunately the M-Shed is closed on mondays, which we didn’t realise, so we didn’t get to go and see the exhibition! It was a shame , and was massively annoying!! I was really looking forward to seeing the exhibition as I love his work. My current...

Trying To Get Work Experience...!
I sent an email to Spirit Contemporary Photography - http://www.capturethespirit.co.uk/ to see if they might be able to help me out with some work experience. They are a company based in Bath and they specialise in a range of photography from portraiture to events and corporate photography.  I’d really love to get some professional studio experience, but also some location shoot experience...

Mentor Interview
For part of our professional studies module, we had to interview someone working in a creative industry. I spoke to Bob Mytton, co-founder of Mytton Williams, a brand and design consultancy in Bath. I met him at the Creative Bath ‘Design Matters’ event at Jika Jika on 7/2/12 and his talk was very insightful and interesting so I asked him if I could interview him.  Bob has worked for...

Client Job Two...
My second client, along with fellow student Beth Hitti, was going to be The Fine Cleaning Company. They are a cleaning company based in Bath who can cover all areas of home cleaning and care.  We had our first meeting with the client, and maintained email contact, all of which went really well. We had agreed that we would help create a testimonials/information video for their website and also...

Work Experience
I emailed Eat Pictures, in Bristol about some possible work experience. Eat Pictures specialise in food photography, which is something I’m interested in as I love food!! Rob, who single handedly runs the business, emailed me back to let me know that a two week placement wouldn’t be possible as his working schedule is quite erratic and not consistent enough for that. He was kind enough...

Typography Infographic Photos Page and Map..
Here’s how my infographic is progressing. I’ve made quite a few changes to it, but I’m pretty pleased with how its looking right now. I’m going to change how the text is displayed on the photo side as it looks way too bland right now. I’ve used good old Helvetica as my font, as its neutral and plain and just good at what it does. I’m finally getting...

Guest Speaker Bella Gingell of Farleigh Wood
(Another late one) Back in December, we had Bella Gingell come to give us a talk about running a business. She is a successful business owner of Farleigh Wood Limited. She told us all about what are the most important things to know when you are starting out, whether you are setting up a professional business or setting up a freelancing business.  She told us about everything from taxes and...

Guest Speaker Dan Dineen of Karyx
(A bit late in blogging about this!!)  On 7th December ‘11, we had Dan Dineen of Karyx come in to talk to us about his experiences in the design world. He is the creative director of Karyx, which is a design company ( http://www.karyx.co.uk/ ) consisting of just two people. He told us all about dealing with clients and staying motivated. It was a really interesting talk and provided us...

Map Placemarkers Continued..
Here are some examples of how the placemarkers look once i place them onto my map. I think i prefer the rounded placemarkers as apposed to the square ones. I also think that red is more clear and effective than yellow. I might see how they look in other colours to make sure that i get the best colour for them!

Map Placemarkers
I’m experimenting with different placemarkers to mark on my typographic map where my photographs were taken. These shapes are the most commonly used and I think they would be nice and clear on my map. I think yellow or red are the colours which stand out best on my map, and they also add a little bit of colour.

Photo Competition No. 2
I have finally got around to entering a second competition as part of my professional studies module. This was one i found on Snapfish’s website. I chose to enter the winter category with some photos that I took when we had snow a couple of years ago.

Client 2 - website
bethhitti: We had a meeting with our second client Luke Salaman, a photographer / lecturer at Bath Spa University. Emily Finlay and myself are going to build him a website to display some of his finest work. We are going to start mocking up some designs on monday and hopefully come up with something minimalist and complementary of his work.

PMS Warrior Logo Design
This is our finished logo design for Bo Novak, at PMS Warrior.com We made a logo and a Twitter/Facebook icon without her company header as we all felt it was much more effective without it. Plus the name PMS Warrior will be appearing next to the image thumbnails on both sites anyway.  The logo is in place on Bo’s Facebook page already and we’re all really happy with how its...

PMS Warrior Filming
Here is Rachel, myself and Beth who went out into SouthGate on January 18th to make a vox pops film for Bo Novak’s website: http://www.pmswarrior.com/  We were talking to women and men of all ages about their experiences of PMS. It was a cold and rainy morning but we managed to get quite a few lovely people willing to stop and chat to us. I think we’ve got some good footage, which...

Brand and Deliver
On 17th January I went along to Creative Bath’s Brand and Deliver talk at the Ustinov Studio. I was helping out at the event as well as going along to hear the talk. It was a really interesting evening, with some great guest speakers. I got a lot from it and heard some great first hand experience about the importance of staying original and creative when you are apart of the design...

Anti-Ads Final Images
These are the images that I chose as my final images for the anti-ads project. I think these were the most successful images that I came up with.

Facebook Anti-Ad
My second idea is to create an anti-ad for Facebook. I want to portray the social networking site as addictive, so create a advert similar to a smoking to drugs advert. This is a rough mock up of a couple of my ideas for the ad, using images from the internet. The plan is to take my own photographs to create adverts using imagery similar to the ones above.

BlackBerry Anti-Ad
One of my ideas for an anti-ad is BlackBerry. I am a BlackBerry user (but not for very much longer) and I was affected by the services blackout so I was feeling pretty annoyed with BlackBerry at the time of this project! I took some stills from one of their tv adverts to create these mock ups as a starting point.  I developed the idea using my own photography.

American Apparel - Anti Ads
This is the second controversial advertising campaign that we looked at for our anti-ads project. This ad campaign was flagged as very controversial due to the amount of nudity and risqué, provocative poses.  There was a lot of contention as many of the models in the company’s adverts appeared to be under the age of consent, however, it was revealed that they were all over the age of 18....

United Colours of Benetton - Anti Ads
A little bit behind in posting this project but here it is! In september we were set the project of creating an anti-ad. We started by looking at United Colours of Bennetton and American Apparel adverts which were controversial when they were published.  Benetton’s extensive advertising campaign was designed by photographer Oliviero Toscani and ran from 1982-2000. Critics of the...

Motion: Kinetic Typography
I’ve started another Motion typography project for the song ‘Friday I’m In Love’ by The Cure. Its a song I love so I thought it might be fun to make a Motion sequence for it. It coming along slowly at the moment, but I’m pushing to get it finished this week!  I think i’m getting to grips with Motion a bit better now that I have it on my Mac, its a bit...

Bid for a job
I used peopleperhour.com to bid for another job. The job I chose to bid for is designing a logo for a new charity. Its a straight forward job which I think I could do really well. This is the second job that I have put in a bid for. Hopefully I will win one of them!

Infographic Map...
Having a catch up with Typography & Motion, and realised I hadn’t blogged this!! Here is my very first idea/mock up type thing for my infographic for typography in Bath:- Its a pretty rough first attempt, I was a bit lacking in inspiration for the map and the layout of it. I don’t like the map, and I also don’t like the photographs across the top of the page. I think that...

Driving Home for Christmas...(sort of)
I’m not actually driving home, i’m going on the train, but i guess Chris Rea’s song wasn’t called ‘going home on the train for christmas’ for a reason… In the process of packing right now to head back down south tomorrow. This just means that I’m piling everything on my bed but none of it is actually headed for the suitcase just yet. Packing and...
