This is the second controversial advertising campaign that we looked at for our anti-ads project. This ad campaign was flagged as very controversial due to the amount of nudity and risqué, provocative poses.
There was a lot of contention as many of the models in the company’s adverts appeared to be under the age of consent, however, it was revealed that they were all over the age of 18. Many people felt, and still feel today, that American Apparel’s adverts are far too sexualised and provocative for a clothing brand. Particularly as the brand sells clothes designed for young children as well as adults.
